Bike Miami Rides are monthly community rides for people interested in riding in small groups and learning how to ride safely in the street, also known as ‘vehicular riding’. Small groups will ride with members of the City of Miami Police Department Bicycle Patrol Unit and volunteers through a different Miami neighborhood each month.
If you are considering bicycle commuting – or just want to feel safer when you ride to the store or a friend’s house – this is a great opportunity to learn the literal ‘Rules of the Road’.

Some Safety Tips for Riding in the Road:::
In the State of Florida, cyclists are considered ‘drivers’ and have the Same Rights & Responsibilities as motorists. A few tips:
- See and Be Seen: Wear lights at night. (front & rear)
- Take the Full Lane when Cars are able to pass you.
- When driving a car, pass cyclists by at least 3 feet.
According to Florida State Traffic Laws
BICYCLES = VEHICLES
A cyclist must follow the SAME traffic rules common to all drivers of all vehicles and has the SAME rights to the roadway. [§316.003]
On all multi-lane roads, cyclists have the SAME right and responsibility as motorists to use the full right lane. [§316.081]
“The 3-foot Law”: The driver of a vehicle (car or bicycle) overtaking another vehicle proceeding in the same direction shall pass to the left thereof at a safe distance and shall not again drive to the right side of the roadway until safely clear of the overtaken vehicle. The driver of any vehicle overtaking a bicycle must pass the bicycle at a safe distance of not less than 3 feet from the bicycle. [§§316.083, 316.085]
